How To Practice Inside

How To Practice Inside

I am often asked how to get the most benefit out of indoor practice sessions. The answer is quite simple…work on parts of your golf swing, putting stroke or chipping motion that you can isolate. What does this mean? I’m glad you asked.

“Perfection is a series of achievable tasks performed so seamlessly that their simplicity is lost in the enormity of the accomplishment”

– From “Every Shot Must Have a Purpose” – By Lynn Marriot and Pia Nilsson

A perfect putting stroke is nothing more than a bunch of small tasks that need to be performed in a certain order. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Grip
  • Posture
  • Alignment of body
  • Alignment of clubface
  • Tempo
  • Stroke Arc
  • Stroke Length
  • Stroke Path

If you want to hit great putts, you need to be all of these things consistenty. If you want to get better, you need to practice all of them…one at a time. So isolate one of them (Grip for example). Is it exactly the same EVERY time? Is the pressure the same EVERY time? If not, then you need to practice that!

What about your full swing? Below is a short checklist of swing fundamentals that you can isolate.

  • Routine
  • Grip
  • Posture
  • Ball Position
  • Alignment of body
  • Alignment of clubface
  • Balance
  • Swing Plane

Do you see one that you are struggling with? If you answered yes, you would benefit from some indoor practice. If you said no, you are lying to yourself. Even the best players in the world work on these things. The point is, everyone needs to practice the fundamentals, and indoors is a great place to do it because you don’t care where the ball goes yet, you only care if you do it correctly!

If you don’t know what to work on, or would like some help formulating a practice plan, give me a call and let’s schedule a lesson. Good luck!
